Performance metrics plan | Performance testing

The performance metrics plan indicates which parts of the test environment are monitored as part of the test execution. It is indicated per part which metrics are collected, at which intervals and how the information will be secured and presented after completion.

Example

Number of transactions per hour:

  • Reported from the performance test tooling and if needed verified via server log reporting after the test
Memory, network traffic, disk usage:
  • Reported from the performance test tooling via connectivity to standard monitoring tools

Etc.

Gathering information when monitoring systems costs money. It uses system capacity and depending on the implementation possible extra network traffic. Per system it needs to be decided which minimum information needs to be monitored. If issues occur during testing that require more monitoring, information-dedicated test runs can be planned with extended monitoring settings.

Analysis will have to take the possible impact of performance monitoring into account and settings have to be restored for the continuation of regular testing.
